SEPTEMBER 30, 2016 | DUTHIE HILL BIKE PARK - ISSAQUAH, WASHINGT0N, USA
Ever get the urge to just jump in your car and hit the open road? After a long, dry summer in Tahoe; we needed an escape. So, Paul and I jumped in his truck and headed north on our yearly pilgrimage to the mecca of freeride mountain biking, Whistler, BC.
Although, it would be easy enough to jump on a plan, fly into Vancouver and take a quick shuttle up to the resort, we opted to drive. This allows us the opportunity to explore some of the great riding throughout the Pacific Northwest. I, myself, have done this drive four times now, and over the course of these four journeys, I have found some of my new favorite riding spots. We've explored the flowy jumps of Black Rock Mountain (outside of Salem, Oregon), the expansive variety of trails in Hood River, OR and the steep rooty offerings outside Seattle and Bellingham, Washington.
On this particular trip, we drove direct from Lake Tahoe, CA to Seattle, WA. A whopping 14 hours straight, leaving us hungry to shred the following morning. We started by exploring a bike park built under the I5 freeway in Seattle. A cool idea, but the protection from the rain provided by the bridge left the trails dryer and dustier than the alpine dessert climate down in Tahoe. We quickly jumped back in the car and headed to nearby Duthie Hill. Duthie is a public park with a large variety of trails ranging from XC loops to dirt jumps and flow trail. We spent a good portion of our day riding the jump lines Duthie had to offer while snapping some photo and video.
After leaving Duthie hungry, tired and happy, we pointed north and headed for the boarder. Next stop; Sunshine Coast, BC and the quickly growing Coast Gravity Park. Below please find some pictures of our adventure. Enjoy!!

SEPTEMBER 29, 2016 | C0AST GRAVITY PARK - BRITISH C0LUMBIA, CANADA
Have you ever lusted over something so badly that you build it up and build it up in your head until the idea is so grand, that once it actually happens it is so underwhelming you are left completely disappointed? My recent experience at Coast Gravity Park was the exact opposite of that!! I had spent an entire year watching videos of the Coastal Crew shredding their newly formed bike park, and I just could not wait to get up there. I could only imagine the fun these guys were having when I watched videos of them ripping trails like Costal Cruise and Flight Deck. Not to mention the numerous videos of favorite riders like Cam Zink, Brandon Semenuk, Logan Peat and Brendan Howey slaying some of the coolest (and biggest), jump lines any bike park has to offer. This past September, I had the opportunity to experience it for myself.
We arrived on the Sunshine Coast of B.C. via ferry in the wee hours of the morning. A fairly steady rain had been falling since our departure from Bellingham, WA at 4am. By the time we had our truck unloaded from the ferry, the steady rain had developed into a down pour. My hopes of riding the bike park that day had dropped to nearly zero. We arrived in Sechelt around 10am, and quickly found the local Starbucks where we could get some Wi-Fi, since our American cellphones were rendered useless. We were analyzing Doppler Radars, and checking local weather, hoping that just maybe the rain would let up and we could ride that day. After changing my flat tire on a garbage can, in front of Starbucks, in a down poor; we decided to drive up to the park just for the heck of it. We took a couple turns out of the town’s center, and the pavement quickly turned to dirt, and we started ascending up into the woods. We worked our way up the windy dirt road as the rain slowly started to break. While we turned into the park’s entrance, we passed the shuttle, which was filled with a small handful of wet, but happy looking riders. We drove down into the base area, the first thing we see is a set of absolutely massive jumps that looked vaguely familiar, from one of the many video parts I had watched in the prior year. The clouds continued to part as we splashed our way through the dirt parking lot. We parked at the base of a hill that had a set of short practice trails, and one familiar looking jump over a massive tube. We had arrived.
The excitement started to build inside of me. I felt like a small child when he first wakes up, on an early Christmas morning. I looked around and saw jumps in all directions. The lips perfectly formed by the wet, grey, sandy looking dirt. I was in paradise, I thought. I quickly jumped from the passenger seat of the car, dug into my gear bag and threw on my shorts, pads and helmet. I grabbed my bike and pushed up to the top. As I looked down, my excitement mixed with nerves, creating a small dose of adrenaline driven anxiety. I quickly pushed that from my mind and dropped in. After hitting the perfectly shaped practice jump a handful of times, we anxiously signed our release forms, and hopped on the first shuttle. It was finally happening; we were about to ride some of the best jump trails in the world. As we sat at the top of Coastal Cruise, waiting to drop in for our first lap, a feeling of self-doubt passed over me, and I started to wonder if I was as talented as I thought. I made the smart play; and scanned the area for what looked like a “local.” I quickly noticed a tall rider, perfectly equipped with a newish, but well ridden bike, bike shorts, flannel and NO gloves. I patiently waited for him to drop in and quickly followed suit. I immediately realized it was time to sink or swim, and there was no room for wavering confidence. As I let me anxiety slowly fall away, I let off the brakes, and followed this guy’s every line. It felt like a bobsled course, meets a terrain park. I felt like a stud. I was quickly railing berms, hitting shark fins, blasting hips and sending jumps bigger than I had ever seen in my life. I was ecstatic! This place is f***ing nuts, I thought to myself, as I pedaled back to the shuttle as fast as I could. The only thing left to do now was; repeat that process 50 more times. Needless to say, we finished our day tired and very happy once again…
